Donald Trump Maintains The Support Of A Majority of White Americans

A recent AP-NORC poll has shown the incredible partisan divide in the country, as many others just like it have also done. It's important to keep track of polling data, because when compiled together, this data sheds light on trends. There is a clear difference in opinion in how Republicans and Democrats, Blacks and Whites...and all others in between view recent and historical events.

Nearly 6 in 10 Americans disapprove of Trump's overall performance, and about the same percentage say the country is headed in the wrong direction according to the new poll. It also showed that 6 in 10 Independents disapprove of Trump's performance. Republicans in particular stood out as supportive, a majority of the group being made up of white Americans. Whites with and without college degrees voted for Donald Trump during the election and remain his most ardent supporters. 53% of Whites approve of Trump's performance and 47% disapprove of his performance.

Interestingly, the poll also showed that while 63% of Americans think the country is headed in the wrong direction (versus 37% who think it's headed in the right direction), nearly two-thirds of Republicans think the country is headed in the right direction. For one, this shows that Republicans actually don't make up a majority of the country and they are attempting to enforce an ideology that most people in the country do not want to implement. This is very important to understand as it can seem that just because Trump won, then that means he has some faux majority support and that cannot be the furthest thing from the truth.

If one were to look at the blog article entitled The Russian Connection: An Unbiased Perspective, then one would see that there is an argument to be made that Trump was the benefactor of a psyop campaign launched by the Russian government against the Democratic Party.  It may take years to figure out the extent to which this potential propaganda campaign influenced the outcome of the election. One thing is clear though, most white Americans are jumping through every logical hoop imaginable to give Donald Trump a pass. This is when data shows most Americans support the Affordable Care Act which the Trump administration tried (and failed) to gut. Most Americans also disagree with Trump on climate change and the gutting of the Clean Power Plan.

How long this support will last remains to be seen. But 53% support among white Americans is not an overwhelming majority by any stretch of the imagination either. With the Russia story growing more and more legs and future failures yet to unfold...there's no telling where this number will be a year or two from now.
