The GOP Is Waging a War on Women

Georgia, Alabama and Missouri Embrace Extremism

There’s a popular saying that goes like this, “if you can’t beat them, join them.” I wish that cliche were universally true. In reality, the GOP is showing us that there’s another alternative. If you can’t beat someone fairly, then wage war on them. The far-right has largely failed at understanding the basic tenets of freedom and democracy. Why? I’d say it’s because freedom for all people, including Women, immigrants, Black Americans, Muslims, Jews stands at odds with how they maintain power.

So if freedom and easy access to democracy is a threat to you based on who uses them, what do you have left to do? Your options are thus, you either accept that there are those who disagree with you and that your policy positions aren’t popular enough and you change (join them). If you don’t do that, then you’re left with the only other viable option for white conservative capitalists – and that’s to simply go to war with everything and everyone you hate. That’s exactly what’s going on right now.

The states of Georgia and Alabama have been rocked in recent days by anti-abortion bills that are direct assaults on Roe v. Wade. This past Tuesday, the Alabama Senate passed the most restrictive anti-abortion law in the country. It’s part of a trend in 2019 where at least a dozen states around the country have either passed or attempted to pass, draconian laws meant to gut Roe v. Wade. The bill implements a complete ban on abortions and criminalizes doctors who perform them – or even attempt to perform them. Doctors face up to 99 years in prison for performing abortions under the new backward law.

The Alabama bill comes on the heels of what’s been called the “fetal heartbeat” anti-abortion bill signed by pseudo-Governor of Georgia Brian Kemp just last week. In Georgia, abortions are banned after 6 weeks and also comes with potential jail time for doctors up to 10 years if they perform abortions after this fascist law goes into effect in 2020. If this weren’t draconian enough, the bill threatens to imprison women who terminate their pregnancies and grants full legal personhood to unborn fetuses meaning if a woman has an abortion after 6 weeks – they could be liable for murder.

The Missouri Senate, as of today joined the aforementioned states in passing a near-total ban on abortions after 8 weeks of pregnancy with no exceptions given for incest or rape. Similar to the bills in Georgia and Alabama, Missouri doctors would also face between 5 and 15 years in prison for performing abortions.

Make no mistake, these moves are being coordinated by anti-abortion interest groups behind the scenes. The intention is to wage war on women’s rights – and liberal democracy in general. This is why Republicans were hellbent on subverting norms to block Merrick Garland from getting onto the Supreme Court and replacing Antonin Scalia. They refused to have a nomination hearing for Garland and began scheming to get a far-right extremist like Trump into the White House (through various forms of voter suppression).

It’s my belief that this was the strategy all along. When Trump got in, he removed Garland and nominated Neil Gorsuch who was confirmed to replace Scalia. Trump was also able to nominate Brett Kavanaugh in a highly-controversial episode that led to a volatile confirmation hearing.

It is the belief of many Republicans that these unconstitutional bills will make it to the Supreme Court where their illegality will be legitimized by what is now the most right-wing partisan hack Court in America.

In case it wasn’t obvious already, America is under attack. Not by foreign Muslims or undocumented immigrants from Central America, but by extremist politicians right here in America. The GOP and the fascists they enable have done more damage to America than Islamic extremism ever has.
